Tosca Opera Play

Tosca is an opera based on Victorien Sardou's drama, La Tosca. It has three acts by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It’s performed for the first time on 14th January in 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. This amazing production became worldwide since its first performance. At first the critics didn’t like the Tosca play and was later called "shabby little shocker" by one musicologist Joseph Kerman. But in 2008 Tosca took up an eight position on Opera America’s 2008 list of the 20 most-produced operas in North America.
This autumn starts the Metropolitan Opera season with Puccini's production “Tosca “. The tickets go on sale in September. On 10th October the environmentalist Bill McKibben will participate in the live opera broadcasts "Tosca". This amazing performance by Giacomo Puccini was also played on the celebration 30th season of Opera Fort Collins.
This real masterpiece has three acts, set during the Napoleonic Era in Italy. Puccini’s idea is to show the relationships between three characters – a painter (Cavaradossi), his lover (Tosca) and the police chief (Scarpia).
On 24th August the Towneley Hall was converted into a scene from 19th century Rome for the amazing classic opera “Tosca”. A crowd from about 100 people stuffed into the hall to see and hear Heritage Opera’s play. A production assistant, Serenna Wagner said that although some of the audience might have been overwhelmed by the loud singer’s voices the show was a great success.
On 24th and 26th March 2010 at the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton will present “Tosca” – Puccini performed by Welsh National Opera. Elisabete Matos will play Floria Tosca, Geraint Dodd represents Cavaradossi and Robert Hayward – Scarpia.
The Teenage Theatre Critic wrote that Tosca opera play was not the best production they had ever seen but it’s almost perfect. They congratulated the acting of Hariclea Darclée, Emilio de Marchi and Eugenio Giraldoni, the costumes design and the idea of the whole opera.
Actually Puccini had composed another 4 operas before starting with “Tosca” in 1895. His first two operas Le villi and Edgar, Manon Lescaut were poor receptions. The character of his third opera La Bohème was full with Romantic sentimentality and after its performance he decided to make something different. That’s why in Tosca, Puccini used the dark side of human emotion.
