Profile Information

What I do... (Actor, director, designer, teacher etc?)
Actor/director/acting teacher/writer
My Quick CV
I trained as an actor at the Actors Workshop in 1969, London's first Stanislavski-based acting school, and worked widely in rep, tours, small-scale theatre, the West End, Royal Court and Young Vic, radio, film and TV. I started directing and teaching acting in 1979 and did many productions for schools such as Rose Bruford and East 15, where I ran the Post Graduate Course for three years. I also co-ran two companies, directing acting workshops, showcases and productions. In 2007, I published Acting on Impulse - Reclaiming the Stanislavski Approach (Methuen Drama) to clarify his process and correct the many distortions, misconceptions and mystifications.
The first thing that inspired me in theatre...
Arnold Wesker's plays
My favourite theatre something is...
Touching the truth of human experience
The thing that annoys me about our industry...
Praise for mediocrity and mannerism, and the low value placed on the Arts
