Since first working professionally as an Actor in 1995, Jorge Balça has performed in Portugal, Spain, France, Netherlands and the UK. A classically trained Counter-Tenor having studied both at the Porto and Algarve Conservatoires and an ex-trampoline gymnast, Jorge is particularly interested in multi-disciplinary performance and cross-culturalism in the Performing Arts.
With a passion for 20th Century European classics, Jorge is proud of his understanding of other theatrical genres such as ‘Commedia dell’Arte’, Puppetry, Physical Theatre and Opera.
Jorge is fluent in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish with basic conversational Italian.
Jorge is member of the Young Vic Directors’ Network and of the Directors’ Guild of Great Britain.
With video artist Sónia Rodrigues, Jorge co-founded the multimedia performance partnership +logo, and is currently the Chairman of this UK Registered Charity.
In the last couple of years, Jorge has rekindled his love affair with classical music and began focusing on Opera.
As a Director, Jorge has studied with names such as John Russell Brown, Leon Rubin, David Peacock, Signy Henderson, Derek Proctor, Lydia Ziemke, Joe Hill-Gibbins, William Harris and Paola Cavallin among others. Jorge studied Meyerhold and Biomechanics at GITIS (Moscow, Russia) with Nicholai Karpov, Oleg Kudrishov, Anna Trifonova and Oleg Glushkov.

Jorge will start his PhD exploring the application of movement theatre techniques to opera training and production at the University of Leeds in October 2009.
