Profile Information
- What I do... (Actor, director, designer, teacher etc?)
- Red Ladder makes new theatre productions and tours them nationally to theatre and community venues.
Founded in 1968 in London, has a colourful history. It spans 30 years, from the radical socialist theatre movement in Britain known as agitprop, to the company's current position.
The company moved to Leeds in the 70's and is still based in the city. During the 80's the company redefined itself, changing its cooperative structure to a hierarchy and became a company that specialised in targeted work for youth audiences. Often targeting young people who have little or no access to theatre.

- Today the company is acknowledged as one of Britain's leading national touring companies producing high quality new plays for youth audiences. Our aim is to make theatre which celebrates, inspires and challenges young people, developing in them the desire and ability to express ideas and strengthen social and cultural cohesion. We are looking to embellish current text-driven practice by experimentation with new theatre practice – including working with other art forms, partnerships and international collaboration.
- The first thing that inspired me in theatre...
- Red Ladder was inspired by the 60's, an era of riots, demonstrations and political debate. They wanted theatre to take part in this revolution of ideas.

A new book that looks at Red Ladder Theatre Company’s extraordinary 40 year history has just been published by Swati Pal, an academic from Delhi University
