What I do... (Actor, director, designer, teacher etc?)
Actors & Writers London (AWL) is London's longest-running professional play-reading forum for actors and writers. It was established in the 1980s at Hammersmith's Riverside Studios and was known as Hammersmith Actors and Writers Group for many years until July 2004.
My favourite theatre something is...
actors and writers!

2009/10 Season

5 October It’s in the Bag by Teresa Jennings

19 October A Grand Complication by Dermot Murphy

2 November As the Light Changes (2) by Liam O'Grady
Daughters of the Empire by Viv Lake
Deadline for Competition entries

16 November Showcase Evening (Members only)
An evening of short plays/scenes/ extracts (no more than 10 minutes please).
Would you like to hear how a new piece of writing might sound?
Do you want a chance to put your acting on show?
Writers: Pass your short play/scene/extract to Jenny Patrick
Actors: Let Jenny Patrick know if you're interested
After each piece, there will be five minutes for quick fire feedback to the writer

30 November Talk by John Plews (Artistic Director, Upstairs at the Gatehouse)

14 December Competition night : Secret Whispers (Members only)

Write a short play: five minutes minimum and ten minutes maximum relating to "Secret Whispers".
Closing date for entries: 2 November
We usually receive more scripts than we can schedule on these occasions, so there will be a selection panel. Bear in mind that it's only a bit of fun. It's best not to enter at all if you can't stand the thought of your play not being selected.

To make things as fair as possible, writers' names will be withheld from the selection panel. Please use a pen name for your script, rather than your real name, and don't include any contact details in the script itself.

Submit your script (Members only) by email to Penny Culliford or present two copies of it to Penny at an AWL meeting. Penny will keep a register of entrants' names but will not pass on this information to anyone else. She will play no part in the selection process.

The same degree of anonymity will be preserved on the evening of the competition itself, when the selected scripts will be presented under pen names. ton

AWL meet at at 7.30 pm on alternate Mondays (with breaks at Christmas and in the Summer months) at:

The Polish Centre,
4th Floor
The Bridge Room
238 King Street,
Hammersmith,
London W6 0RF
(close to Ravenscourt Park underground station).
