Profile Information

What I do... (Actor, director, designer, teacher etc?)
I'm fascinated by language: what it means, how it sounds and the effects it has on us, emotionally and intellectually. I enjoy the thrill of live theatre, and especially of hearing new work brought to life by my brilliant actor and director friends in Actors Writers London.

My biggest project at the moment is self-publishing my book: Language with Altitude. This is a teaching primer aimed at helping writers to exploit the richness and power of the English Language. There's a link to my website further down this page, or just search on Google for "language with altitude".
My Quick CV
My websites will tell you more about me than I could say here.

Briefly, however, I started teaching business report writing skills about twenty years ago. Also in the late 1980s, I began to write plays, though I didn't take this too seriously until about ten years ago.

Shortly before the Millennium, I began to focus on teaching creative writing skills. This work has caused me to question my approach to writing and to make many interesting new discoveries about writing technique.
The first thing that inspired me in theatre...
I was particularly inspired by the opening of London's new National Theatre in the 1970s, when I was in my early twenties.
My favourite theatre something is...
Actors & Writers London, a great place for meeting fantastic people and working with them.
The thing that annoys me about our industry...
I am very much saddened by the way theatre is being undermined by inferior on-demand media: television and video

actors, 70 writers and 20 directors. Our meetings attract about 60
people on average, and there is plenty of opportunity for participation
in our chaired, end-of-reading discussion and in the inexpensive bar
just across the landing. Full

On-Line Writing Tutorials

See w4r.co.uk for six on-line writing tutorials with a playing time of one hour, completely free of charge. The tutorials offer radio writing techniques, but there are interesting ideas for theatre writers too, concerning the creative process, subtext, plot and characterisation.

Hi Paddy and thanks for the friend addition. Always intriguing to see what mutual friends we have - even outside the AWL membership :-)

Last AWL readings made great contrasts (black slave trade history .v. auntie Emily's escape on the QEII :-) Very interesting evening. Thank you.
